this is the first product released in 1989. Claus van Bebber & Helmut Lemke met 1982 when they co-founded the arist group "Heinrich Mucken" with among
others D. Schlensog and M. Vorfeld They started their duo in 1986 which was then called “Just Married". There they improvised on traditional and self-made instruments.
This LP documents the music of that period. Today Claus and Helmut still collaborate under the name “van Bebber - Lemke Duo” concentrating on the exclusive use of turntables/prepared records which are
plaxed by Claus while Helut plays a self-made multi tape-desk player.

"Schallplattenkonzert" 1992
8cm CD elc 12003
|
Schallplattenkonzert literally means "record concert," as in a performance on turntables. Indeed, turntables and records have been Claus van Bebber's favorite
medium of expression over a few years. This one-track 3" CD was recorded in December 1992 and released in 1993 on Helmut Lemke's imprint Edition el C. Bebber uses surface noise, prepared records, and
selected electronic and classical records sped up, slowed down, or played backwards in order to build an impressive multi-voiced piece. His music is not as anecdotal as Christian Marclay's or as abstract as most
of Martin Tétreault's late-'90s output. It draws from the inherent cross-referentiality of the medium itself (surface noise, the recorded sound itself, the noticeable effects of speed manipulation) in order to
create a metaphorical, alienated, and somewhat very poetical piece that transcends any and every genre (the records themselves are made unrecognizable) and self-destructs in the last 90 seconds. Any person
interested in experimental turntablists like Marclay, Tétreault, or Otomo Yoshihide should try to track down this CD. François Couture in "All Music Guide"

"Tubuläre Tänze" 1992
8cm CD elc 12004
|
The EP Tubuläre Tänze (Tubular Dances) was released as a 3" CD on Helmut Lemke's own label, Edition El C. Tubuläre Tänze is a six-part suite involving voice,
saxophone, bass clarinet, sampled sounds, assorted percussion, and miscellaneous instruments, all performed by Helmut Lemke (or so it seems). There is very little dancing in these strange and haunted short
pieces. From the light percussion work of "Tänze 1" to the loud string scratching of "Tänze 3," the listener experiences a surreal "tour de chant." Take "Tänze 3" for
instance: metal (guitar?) strings are scratched while someone sings in a self-mocking crooner voice and a jazzy saxophone is heard in the distance. "Tänze 4" is built on a quasi-rhythmical loop and is
the closest the music gets to a "dance," while "Tänze 5" is a free improvisation with all the aforementioned elements....Inquisitive minds will find it enjoyably puzzling.

"That other worldly Feeling"
1995
8cm CD elc 12007
|
UK resident John Jasnoch is an improvising guitarist/stringed instrument player of no small ability. He was a participant in Derek Bailey's 1988 'Company Week', and has
released numerous interesting solo and collaborative projects. This wee little mini-CD contains five pieces which clock-in at about 21 minutes and possess enough brain and ear candy to rival any full-length CD
guitar record I've heard in recent memory. [From biography] "[Jasnoch] began playing guitar 1967. After having spent a number of years in various areas of popular music (primarily “folk”, top 40 and Country
& Western), became involved with improvised music in 1978. Moved to Sheffield in 1979 and joined Sheffield Free Music Group. Subsequently joined “new-wave/free-jazz” group Bass Tone Trap. Then went on to
work extensively with (for example): woodwind player Charlie Collins in a regular duo, in the Modum Quartet, the Bone Orchestra and other ensembles; + Martin Archer in the electro-acoustic duo ASK and the
extended sax quartet Hornweb. In 1988, took part in Derek Bailey’s “Company Week” at the ICA London. Went on to play many concerts in UK, mainland Europe and North America both as a soloist and with various ad
hoc ensembles (with [for example] LaDonna Smith, Davey Williams, Paul Lytton, Louis Moholo, Jeffrey Morgan, Erhard Hirt, Max Eastley). Current main activities are duo with instrument builder/sound artist Helmut
Lemke (The Long & The Short Of It) and duo with drummer/percussionist Rob Dainton. Approach to guitar playing is a multi-instrumental one (as is common with woodwind players) utilising a number of types
of guitar and guitar variants. No interest in instrument preparation or alternative tunings – more interested in using conventional guitar language (as I understand it) in a creative way." ...and lemme
tell ya folks, Jasnoch delivers. Toss those silly 'Frippertronics' and Steve Vai records and dig into the real deal.

"the long and the short of it"
2000
CD elc 12017
|
"eerie tones and unusual string interaction of the unstructured variety are the product of Jasnoch and Lemke on `the long and the short of it`. The two musicians
play a large assortment of instruments in communicating freely on three extended selections...." " (they) are explorers of the unknown who take off with no destination in mind and arrive at
never-never land. It is a stimulating but unsettling listening experience." Frank Rubolino "Cadence" march 2001 "A playful, yet edgy, immediacy, is what first jumps out at you on this
CD. These live improvisations actually sound improvised – raw, on-the-edge, physically palpable. You can really feel the music being created in the respective environments. Though both players have easily
distinguishable sounds and styles: Jasnoch, a fleet-fingered, wiry twang that manages to sound laid-back and propulsive, idiomatic and non-idiomatic, at the same time; and Lemke, a wide-ranging, unpredictable,
forceful, almost rambunctious, personality that comes through strongly on each instrument – it is their tandem sound that puts this CD on a higher level than most. It’s a hard-scrabble, bustling sound that
builds in intensity as the pieces develop but not in predictable ways. There’s a complex, almost paradoxical, manner in which these two improvise together. Though there’s obvious rapport, their energies don’t
always "mesh" in harmonious accommodation. The resultant music therefore has a razor-sharp "aliveness" " to it, a sense of intense concentration, rather than competition, that I find
exhilerating. This CD captures that elusive, "in the moment" sound of a good duo gig as well as any I’ve heard."
